what does this mean 001 ?

from an article about deKooning (talking about 1980ish paintings):

Unlike other recent deKoonings, these don't appear caught in the act of tearing themselves apart. Even the big seven-foot ones feel a bit like drawings waiting for mats.

"drawings waiting for mats" -- what does this mean? What mats? The cat sat on the mat. It is something on a floor.

Do I have a brain disease already

In any case I like the paintings "Peter Schjeldahl" is discussing, in "The Hydrogen Jukebox: Selected Writings"

Some sort of illustrated mat? That attend drawings, waiting drawings?

  1. why are these late paintings so good?

why do they seem luxuriant and interesting?

why are they not widely exhibited

(I have never seen one, sometimes I daydream of a large space, 300 late deKoonings are in it, like on those walls with no companion at right angle walls like in a commercial-ish exhibition space. I day dream of this space and imagine (among daydream) dizzy response, and seeing all those paintings thankyou
