anime selection #1

Here is a scene from a good anime GUNBUSTER: Aim for the Top! (top o nerae) -- it handily has italian subtitles to prevent spoilering, unless that is you know italian and/or japanese.

GUNBUSTER starts as a high school (for giant robot pilots) comedy melodrama and ends a vast scaled space opera with time dilation, the planet jupiter compressed into a weapon, and deep attendant melancholies.

After this the clinically depressed director, Hideaki Anno, would go on to make Neon Genesis Evangelion

Something in the anime that appeals to me projects an extreme sadness partly bonded to ridiculous romanticisms, perhaps it is either this odd disjunction or revelation of connections hitherto unseen that causes special atmosphere of the special appealing animes ?
