"As so often in Free Improvisation, one's listening veered from total scepticism - 'nothing is happening, it's complete chaos' - to rapt admiration as the musicians made invention palpable in the instant. Starting from degree zero, shorn of the capital investments and power-broking that have locked Modern Art in the gallery, Free Improvisation delivers its promise . . . "
^ -- from book on Derek Bailey by Ben Watson

That's how it is in the middle of a Haino Keiji concert, I thought while reading this on google books accidentally. Ben Watson doesn't like Haino Keiji, judging by something I can't find right now. But he expresses perfectly what I have often experienced.

-- I think that is a quote from the book. Also think I came across something in a forum long ago now.

-- I like the quote, it is the sort of embarassment, the "total scepticism", wobble at the centre, of things, of performance, of identity.

    Instability, silliness, of "authenticity"

    1. derek bailey biography is now available in japanese translation. I wonder if the above stuff is included.

I like haino keiji by the way. He is by now means a con-artist/

their was/is a something-something(i am not an academic) marxisti-ish squiffy way of thinking, about improvised music, at the time or still.

      improvised music is improvised music.

I do so now and then.

no idea concerning politics, it's just, there are fucking, for example guitar strings, and one has decided, foolishly, to engage with them///

    2. I have ti fucking correct myself as usal "by no means is a con artist" if that is what ben watson is actually suggesting, I don't mind debating this. for example I think current "fushitsusha" is a almost con-act, because the bassists ozawa was the essential part.

"aihiyo" as cover band was marvellous, they could have carried on, now, and done "fushitsusha" songs as part of the covers. . .

  2. now I have to fucking correct myself because I said "ti" not "to" as in "to correct myself" and I have said nothing this is typing, it is on a keyboard, I believe, electronicalaly! imagine!
