Barrington J. Bayley died of cancer the 14th of October. I think he was my favourite of the troupe surviving fairly unknown after New Worlds and probably all their little publishing deals ran out.
In fact he is the author I have always been thinking about the most when thinking about science fiction and all that. I recommend everything of his I read, which is precisely the following:
knights of the limit - short stories, they stoically remove limits that were previously assumed.
the zen gun - how to get a space opera out of a koan
garments of caean - about intelligent garments planning to take over the universe. There is a wonderful bit describing a war between russia and japan, evolved into space, and the russians and japanese evolved biologically speaking to carry it on
fall of chronopolis - empire forged through time travel technology, meets empire in the future with better (further reaching) time travel technology. Does proper paradox and beyond all conventionally assumed limits.

there are fortunately many more texts he has left us. There was a copy of Knights of the Limit in Oxfam, Liverpool, last time I checked (one and half years ago)!
